The Scene
Not sure where to go out tonight? See below to get an idea of Rochester's lively hot spots and trendy hangouts.
Know of some new places? Email Jessica with your suggestions.
1. East End
Straddling the downtown interloop is East End, an upscale stretch of lounges and bars starting at Salinger's and moving East towards Monty's Corner.
You'll find dance clubs (Soho, A Pub, Karma, Coyote Joe's) and more pub-like and lounge establishments (Mex, Monty's Corner, Barfly, The Old Toad). Each place has a distinct flavor and reputation.
2. Monroe Ave
Between 490 and the interloop is the pulsing Monroe Ave district. This area embodies the laid back side of Rochester. Most bars are either sportsbars (Sport's Page) or neighborhood pubs (Acme, Woody's, Oxfords, Spike's, O'Callahans)....lowkey and suitable for jeans and a t-shirt. If those don't suit you, try the Bugjar for real entertainment. Catch one of their drag shows and support the local talent.
This is also where you'll find the famous garbage plate and can chow down at Gitsis in the wee hours of the morning. Looking for a more distinguished menu? Try the candlelit Lola or head for sushi at the Plum House.
3. Park Ave
Nestled amongst Rochester's historic mansions, Park Ave is the trendy and uppercrust place to dine. Though only two bars are here (Park Bench and Park Ave Pub), there are numerous other great places for a relaxing sidewalk brunch (Jine's) or late night glass of wine (Cibon's). You can find almost any type of food from chinese to pizza on this tree lined ave.
4. Southwedge
Known for it's more alternative and diverse scene, the Southwedge houses a tidy array of interesting spots. From the popular hangout of MacGregors to the eccentric Lux Lounge, this area can suit anything but a suit itself.
5. St. Paul's Quarter
Just inside the Genesee River and the interloop is St. Paul's Quarter. Home to a variety of lounges and clubs, this area provides everything from Salsa dancing (Tapas) to great Euro-American cruisine (Table 7).

Welcome to Rochester, New York.
Founded in 1803, Rochester boasts of a city rich in history and natural beauty. From the weathered headstones of Mount Hope Cemetery to the renown Erie Canal that spans 363 miles across New York State, Rochester connects the past to the present. The historic Public Market can still be found selling fresh veggies and tasty treats on a Saturday morning just as it did 100 years ago. East Avenue is still home to beautifully preserved churches and some of the area's finest mansions. And since the very first Lilac Festival over 100 years ago, the Lilac Festival still starts off the summer’s outdoor festivities come May.
Renown for over 11,000 acres of parkland, Rochester enjoys the summer to the fullest. Stroll down the boardwalk at Ontario Beach Park, watch a volleyball game on the sandy beach, or take a ride on the antique carousel. Even better, take a day trip over to Toronto for shopping and sightseeing.
If you’re up for a short drive, take a trip down to the majestic Finger Lakes. Surrounded by rolling hills with dense forests separated by farms and wineries, the region is one of the most breathtaking New York has to offer. Come down in the fall when the leaves change colors and the bright oranges and reds reflect off the calm waters. Hike among glacier carved gorges and if you’re tired, try one of the many quaint bed and breakfasts that dot the area. But don’t forget to stop at one of the many wineries and get the firsthand experience of Finger Lake wine.
With over 95 inches of snowfall a year, Rochester turns into a winter wonderland come late November. To make the most of the fresh powder, head down to Bristol Ski Resort for a day of skiing or snowboarding. To warm-up, try one of Rochester’s famous barbecue grills. The popular Dinosaur Barbecue Restaurant, located downtown next to the Genesee River, has the best ribs and pulled pork in town.
But if you’re up for a weekend trip, don’t forget that Toronto, Niagara Falls, Washington D.C, and New York City are only a few hours away. Make the most of Rochester’s central location and also visit the beautiful wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains if you have time.
